Pakistan’s stock market came under fresh pressure in Karachi on Wednesday as investors reacted cautiously to growing geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East and the absence of clear progress on a US-Iran diplomatic settlement. The selling wave pushed the benchmark KSE-100 index below the 170,000-point level during intraday trading before it recovered some ground by the close.

The Pakistan Stock Exchange ended the session at 170,190.64 points, recording a decline of 831.13 points, or 0.49 percent, from the previous close of 171,021.77. The market moved within a wide trading band, touching an intraday high of 171,624 points before sliding to a low of 169,790 points as profit-taking gained momentum.

Market participants said investors preferred to lock in gains rather than take fresh positions because there were few immediate positive triggers. The continuing uncertainty around the Middle East conflict, its potential impact on global oil prices and the fragile state of international diplomacy weighed heavily on sentiment throughout the session.

Topline Securities noted that the day’s fall was driven by cautious positioning and profit-booking, while major index-heavy stocks carried much of the pressure. Lucky Cement, United Bank, Meezan Bank, Engro Holdings and Hub Power together pulled the benchmark down by roughly 343 points, showing that selling was concentrated in influential blue-chip names.

Ali Najib, Deputy Head of Trading at Arif Habib Ltd, said investor mood remained fragile because there was no meaningful progress on the US-Iran diplomatic front. According to the market view, investors stayed largely on the sidelines as uncertainty over a possible peace arrangement kept trading negative and range-bound.

The session also came as fresh economic data showed a mixed picture for Pakistan’s external sector. The country’s trade deficit for May narrowed both year-on-year and month-on-month to $2.58 billion, while exports rose modestly and imports declined during the month. However, the cumulative July-May FY26 deficit still increased by 17 percent year-on-year to around $34.7 billion, keeping concerns alive about longer-term external pressure.

Corporate news offered some support but was not strong enough to shift the market’s direction. Oil and Gas Development Company announced an oil discovery at Bobi Deep-1 in Sanghar, Sindh, with analysts estimating a positive earnings contribution from the find. Even so, the announcement was overshadowed by broader risk concerns and weakness in heavyweight counters.

Trading activity remained reasonably steady, with total volume reaching 552 million shares. However, traded value fell by more than 13 percent to about Rs23.7 billion, indicating that while turnover stayed active, investors were less aggressive in committing larger amounts of capital. Treet Battery led the volume chart with 46.6 million shares.

For Pakistan’s economy, the market decline reflects how quickly external political shocks can affect domestic financial confidence. Higher global oil prices, uncertain regional security and weak export momentum can influence inflation expectations, the rupee outlook and corporate earnings, making investors more sensitive ahead of the federal budget and key policy decisions.

The coming sessions will depend on whether diplomatic signals from the Middle East improve and whether domestic economic announcements provide a stronger reason for investors to return. Until clarity emerges on geopolitical risks and budget direction, the PSX may continue to see cautious trading, selective buying and quick profit-taking after every recovery attempt.
