Six Children Die as Mud-House Roof Collapses in Shangla

Six children from one family lost their lives on Tuesday after the roof of a mud house collapsed in Shangla district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, turning an early-morning household tragedy into a major local emergency. The incident occurred in the Rahimabad Bassi area of Alpuri tehsil, where Rescue 1122 teams were called after children were trapped under debris.

According to rescue officials, seven children were inside the house when the roof gave way. The children were reportedly asleep at the time, leaving them with little chance to escape as mud, timber and structural material fell into the room.

Emergency responders reached the site soon after receiving the alert and began removing debris by hand and with available local support. Rescue personnel recovered the bodies within about an hour, while one injured child was pulled out alive and shifted for medical care in critical condition.

Rescue 1122 Shangla spokesperson Rasool Khan Sharif said the call was treated as an urgent rescue operation because several minors were believed to be buried under the collapsed structure. Officials confirmed that six children had died and that the surviving child remained in serious condition after being rescued.

The deceased children were from the same household, intensifying the grief for relatives and residents of the area. Authorities identified the victims as children aged between five and fourteen, while the injured child was stated to be around eleven years old.

The tragedy has again drawn attention to the vulnerability of mud-built homes in mountainous and rural parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Many families in such areas live in houses that are exposed to weather damage, weak foundations and ageing roof structures, particularly where repairs are difficult because of limited income and challenging terrain.

A similar incident was reported last month in Charsadda district, where three children were killed and a couple was seriously injured after a roof collapsed in the Prang Majoki area. Repeated incidents of this nature highlight the risks faced by low-income households living in fragile structures across the province.

For Pakistan, the Shangla collapse is more than a local accident; it points to wider concerns about rural housing safety, emergency preparedness and the absence of regular structural checks in vulnerable communities. Families in remote areas often depend on traditional construction methods, while rescue services must respond across difficult mountain routes.

The immediate focus remains on treatment for the injured child and support for the bereaved family. Local authorities are expected to assess the damaged house and surrounding structures, while the incident may renew calls for safer rural housing, disaster-risk awareness and stronger community-level prevention measures before further tragedies occur.
