FO Checks Reports of Pakistani Farmers’ Murder in Italy

Pakistan’s Foreign Office said on Tuesday that the nationality of four people reported dead in a violent incident in southern Italy had not yet been formally confirmed, after reports emerged that Pakistani farm workers were found dead inside a burnt-out vehicle. The case has triggered concern in Pakistan because Italian media reported that the victims and two arrested suspects were Pakistani nationals.

The incident was reported from the Calabria region, where a minivan was found burned at a petrol station near the village of Amendolara. Italian daily Corriere della Sera reported that police had arrested two Pakistani nationals in connection with the deaths, while local investigators were examining the circumstances surrounding the fatal fire.

According to the report cited by Dawn, firefighters discovered four bodies inside the vehicle after extinguishing the blaze. CCTV footage from the petrol station reportedly showed two people preventing the van’s doors from opening and then throwing liquid inside before the fire broke out.

The Foreign Office said the deceased individuals were being described in reports as Pakistanis, but their exact nationality had not been verified at the time of the statement. It added that Pakistan’s embassy in Italy was following the case and remained in contact with local authorities for further updates.

Italian police chief Antonio Borelli was quoted by the newspaper as saying investigators were treating the case as murder, though the full details still had to be established. His remarks indicated that police were not viewing the incident as an accident, but as a deliberate and violent act requiring a deeper criminal investigation.

The report also pointed to a troubling pattern in the area, saying there had been multiple arson cases involving cars and minivans carrying Pakistanis in recent months. The tensions were linked in the report to disputes among migrant communities over farm work, legal papers, housing and control of limited earning opportunities.

The case highlights the vulnerable position of migrant labourers working in Europe’s agricultural belts. Many such workers depend on seasonal farm jobs, live in uncertain housing conditions and remain exposed to exploitation, community rivalries and weak protection when their legal or economic status is fragile.

For Pakistan, the incident carries both human and diplomatic significance. If the victims are confirmed to be Pakistani citizens, authorities will face pressure to support their families, coordinate with Italian investigators and ensure that the case is pursued transparently through the local justice system.

The next step will depend on forensic identification, formal confirmation of the victims’ nationality and the progress of the Italian police investigation.
