Arafat Minhas Shines on ODI Debut as Pakistan Beat Australia

Arafat Minhas delivered a dream international breakthrough in Rawalpindi as Pakistan defeated Australia by five wickets in the opening One-day International of the series. The young left-arm spinner’s match-winning spell came on a historic day for Pakistan cricket, with the national side playing its 1,000th ODI.

The 21-year-old produced figures of 5-32 on debut, becoming the first Pakistan bowler to take a five-wicket haul in his maiden ODI appearance. His spell helped bowl Australia out for 200 before Pakistan completed the chase comfortably, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Arafat entered the attack after Australia had reached 51-1, but he quickly turned the match in Pakistan’s favour. The spinner credited the Rawalpindi conditions for assisting Pakistan’s slow bowlers. Arafat also spoke about managing pressure on debut, saying his focus was on enjoying the moment and staying close to his basics. He avoided setting a specific target for wickets and instead concentrated on executing his natural game, a mindset that helped him remain composed in a high-profile contest.

The young cricketer acknowledged the role of his family, coaches and support system in his rise through Pakistan’s cricket structure. Having developed through age-group cricket and Pakistan Shaheens, he said his ambition is not to replace any senior player but to build his own identity and become a regular match-winner for the national side.

Australia’s Matt Renshaw, who top-scored with 61, praised Arafat’s impact and admitted that the early loss of wickets left Australia struggling to build a competitive total. Short also contributed a half-century, but Australia’s middle-order collapse prevented the visitors from taking control of the match.

Pakistan’s chase was anchored by a 127-run third-wicket partnership between Babar Azam and wicketkeeper-batter Ghazi Ghori. Their stand ensured that Arafat’s bowling brilliance was not wasted, as Pakistan reached the target with 45 balls remaining and began the series with confidence.
