Muneeb Butt Gets Interim Bail in Karachi Kidnapping Case
A Karachi anti-terrorism court has granted interim pre-arrest bail to television actor Muneeb Ahmed Butt in a kidnapping and robbery-related case that has drawn wide public attention because of the actor’s celebrity profile and the serious nature of the allegations. The development was reported on Friday after Butt appeared before the court in connection with a case registered at the Airport police station.
The case stems from a complaint filed by a citizen, Mutaal Khan, who alleged that he was abducted last month while travelling to the airport for a flight to Lahore. According to the complaint, a double-cabin vehicle carrying armed men intercepted his cab, after which he was allegedly taken away by force under the claim that he had been involved in an accident.
The complainant alleged that he was moved between different locations before his phone was seized and digital assets worth 8,600 USDT were transferred from his account. He also claimed that his laptop was taken and that he was later abandoned in the Korangi Industrial Area, after which police initiated legal proceedings in the matter.
Advocate Syed Israr Ali Shah, counsel for the complainant, told Dawn that police had arrested four suspects identified as Hamza, Saalim, Shahid and Wazir. He said investigators later booked additional suspects, including a police constable and actor Muneeb Butt, in connection with the case.
The complainant’s lawyer stated that the investigating officer had informed him that the actor was accused of facilitating at least two suspects while they were allegedly hiding in Islamabad. However, he also said he remained uncertain about whether the actor had any direct involvement in the crime, underlining that the matter was still subject to investigation and judicial scrutiny.
Butt had earlier obtained protective bail from the Islamabad High Court before surrendering before the Karachi anti-terrorism court. His legal team then moved a pre-arrest bail application, after which the court granted interim relief against a surety bond of Rs100,000.
The case has been registered under provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code dealing with kidnapping for extortion, robbery and common intention, along with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act. The use of anti-terrorism provisions indicates that investigators are treating the alleged abduction and extortion claims as a serious criminal matter rather than an ordinary street-crime complaint.
For Pakistan’s entertainment industry, the case is significant because it places a well-known actor in the middle of a high-profile criminal investigation. Public interest is likely to remain high as fans, legal observers and media outlets follow whether the prosecution is able to establish any prosecutable link between the actor and the accused already in custody.
The court has fixed June 8 for the next stage of the bail proceedings, when the interim relief may either be confirmed or reconsidered. Until then, the actor remains protected from immediate arrest, while investigators are expected to continue examining the allegations, statements and evidence connected to the case.
