PSX Gains as KSE-100 Climbs Near 167,700 Level
The Pakistan Stock Exchange showed a modest recovery during early trading on Thursday, as the benchmark KSE-100 Index moved higher and approached the 167,700-point mark. The positive movement came after a volatile previous session, giving investors a brief signal of renewed confidence in selected sectors.
By midday, the KSE-100 Index was recorded at 167,705.02 points, gaining 253.89 points or 0.15% from the previous close of 167,451.13. The index had touched an intraday high of 168,528.87 before profit-taking trimmed part of the early advance.
The day’s lower level was recorded at 167,209.36, showing that the market remained cautious despite the upward move. Trading volume also remained active, with more than 86.5 million shares changing hands and the total value of trades reaching around Rs5.58 billion.
Market participants appeared selectively optimistic, with buying seen in banking, fertiliser and power-sector stocks. Analysts linked the positive tone to expectations of economic stability, upcoming corporate earnings and macroeconomic signals that could influence investor positioning.
The wider market mood, however, remained sensitive to global and regional developments. Ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran continued to weigh on investor sentiment, especially because geopolitical uncertainty can affect oil prices, external financing conditions and risk appetite in emerging markets.
The early recovery followed a difficult session on Wednesday, when the PSX opened positively but later came under heavy selling pressure. By the close, the benchmark index had dropped 1,465.09 points, or 0.87%, to settle at 167,451.14.
One major supportive factor for the market was the State Bank of Pakistan’s confirmation that it had received $1.3 billion from the International Monetary Fund under the Extended Fund Facility and the Resilience and Sustainability Facility. Such inflows are closely watched because they strengthen reserves and support confidence in Pakistan’s external account outlook.
The performance of the PSX matters for Pakistan’s broader economic sentiment, particularly as businesses and investors monitor currency stability, foreign inflows, interest-rate expectations and the government’s fiscal plans. Even modest gains can help stabilise sentiment after sharp declines, though sustained recovery requires stronger volume and broader participation.
Going forward, investors are expected to track corporate results, global oil prices, geopolitical developments and government economic policy signals. The market’s ability to hold gains through the closing session will determine whether Thursday’s early rise becomes a durable recovery or another short-lived rebound.
