Babar Azam Ruled Out of Pakistan Test Opener With Knee Injury

Pakistan cricket suffered a major selection setback on Thursday after the Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed that Babar Azam will miss the opening Test against Bangladesh because of an injury to his left knee. The first match of the two-Test series is scheduled to begin on May 8 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

The development comes at a sensitive point for Pakistan’s red-ball plans, as the team prepares to begin a fresh Test assignment without one of its most experienced and closely watched batters. Babar’s absence is expected to reshape the batting order and increase responsibility on the remaining senior players.

According to the PCB, the former captain has been ruled out of the first Test while the team’s medical staff continue to assess his condition. The board said a further update on his recovery will be issued in due course, leaving his availability for the second Test dependent on medical progress.

The announcement carries extra weight because Babar had entered the international window after a powerful domestic franchise season. He finished Pakistan Super League 11 as the leading run-scorer, collecting 588 runs in 11 innings at an average of 73.02 and a strike rate of 145.90.

His recent form had raised expectations that he would be central to Pakistan’s batting approach in Bangladesh. His century in the PSL qualifier against Islamabad United was one of the key performances of the tournament and helped Peshawar Zalmi move into the final, where the side eventually went on to win the title.

Pakistan’s squad for the first Test includes captain Shan Masood, Abdullah Fazal, Amad Butt, Azan Awais, Hasan Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Khurram Shahzad, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Rizwan, Muhammad Ghazi Ghori, Noman Ali, Sajid Khan, Salman Ali Agha, Saud Shakeel and Shaheen Shah Afridi. With Babar unavailable, the team management will now have to decide how to balance experience, technique and conditions.

Babar has long been one of Pakistan’s most important batting figures across formats, and his presence often shapes the rhythm of the innings. In Test cricket, where partnerships and session-by-session discipline matter heavily, losing a player of his profile forces a deeper tactical adjustment than a routine selection change.
