PM Shehbaz and CDF Munir Attend Martyr’s Funeral

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir attended the funeral prayer of Lieutenant Colonel Khalid Hussain Shaheed at Chaklala Garrison in Rawalpindi on Wednesday, in a solemn ceremony that drew senior civilian and military leadership. The officer, who belonged to District Sargodha, embraced martyrdom after sustaining injuries during an intelligence-based operation in Balochistan.

According to the military’s media wing, Lt Col Khalid Hussain was leading his men during the operation when he was wounded while confronting terrorists. He later succumbed to his injuries, marking another major sacrifice by Pakistan’s security forces in the continuing fight against militancy and cross-border sponsored violence.

The funeral was attended by federal ministers for interior and information, senior serving and retired officers, relatives of the martyred officer and a large number of citizens. The presence of top national leadership reflected the significance of the sacrifice and the state’s effort to show public solidarity with the family and the armed forces.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to Lt Col Khalid Hussain’s courage, devotion to duty and commitment to the defence of Pakistan. He said the country’s armed forces, with the full support of the nation, remain determined to eliminate terrorism and its facilitators, while protecting Pakistan’s peace, sovereignty and stability.

The official account described the operation in Balochistan as part of the broader campaign against terrorist networks operating in sensitive areas. Security officials have repeatedly said that militant groups continue to exploit difficult terrain and external support networks, making intelligence-based operations a central pillar of Pakistan’s counterterrorism strategy.

Balochistan has remained a major focus of security operations because of attacks on civilians, security personnel, infrastructure and development-linked projects. The province’s geographic importance, border sensitivities and resource corridors have made stability there a national security priority for successive governments and military leadership.

The martyrdom of a senior field officer also highlights the direct role played by commanders in front-line operations. In many counterterrorism missions, officers lead troops into high-risk areas where intelligence, rapid response and local coordination are crucial to preventing militant groups from regrouping or expanding their reach.

For Pakistan, the ceremony carried both emotional and strategic importance. Lt Col Khalid Hussain Shaheed will be laid to rest in his native town with full military honours.
