Prominent Cleric Killed in Charsadda Targeted Attack

A prominent religious scholar, Maulana Muhammad Idrees Tarangzai, was killed in a targeted gun attack in Charsadda, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, on Tuesday, triggering a major police investigation and strong political reaction across the country. Two police constables were also injured in the assault, which authorities believe was planned and carried out by armed attackers riding motorcycles.

Police said the attack occurred in the morning within the jurisdiction of Utmankhel police station. According to initial details, four unidentified assailants on two motorcycles opened fire on the vehicle carrying the cleric, who was widely known as Sheikhul Hadith Maulana Muhammad Idrees. He and the wounded police personnel were immediately shifted to hospital, but the scholar succumbed to his injuries before reaching medical care.

The area was sealed shortly after the attack as police and security teams launched a search operation. Investigators later obtained images of the suspected attackers through Safe City cameras and began raids at different locations. Officials said the available evidence indicated a targeted killing rather than a random act of violence.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed took notice of the incident and ordered the formation of joint investigation teams comprising the Counter Terrorism Department and district police. He directed investigators to use modern forensic and technical methods, adding that the killers and their facilitators would be traced and brought before the law.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief over the cleric’s death and extended condolences to his family. The president said terrorist violence would not weaken the national resolve to restore peace, while the prime minister prayed for the martyred scholar and the early recovery of the injured police personnel.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi also condemned the attack and sought a detailed report from the provincial police. The incident has sharpened concerns over security in parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, where attacks on religious figures, political leaders and law-enforcement personnel have repeatedly raised questions about militant networks and local policing gaps.

The killing quickly became a major political issue after JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman announced peaceful protests across the country on Wednesday and Friday. Party spokesperson Aslam Ghouri said demonstrations would be held at provincial headquarters and district levels, describing the cleric’s death as a serious loss and accusing authorities of failing to protect citizens.

The attack also revived memories of earlier incidents in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa involving religious and political figures. In recent months, militant-linked violence has targeted clerics, seminaries and political workers in different districts, adding pressure on provincial and federal authorities to strengthen intelligence-based operations and improve preventive security.

For Pakistan, the Charsadda killing carries consequences beyond one district. It may increase political pressure on the government, intensify debate over counterterrorism policy and deepen public anxiety in areas already affected by insecurity. The death of a well-known cleric also risks fueling street mobilisation at a time when authorities are trying to maintain order.

The next phase of the case will depend on how quickly investigators identify and arrest the attackers. With CCTV evidence reportedly secured and raids underway, police say the network behind the attack has been traced, but public confidence will depend on visible progress, transparent investigation and action against both the shooters and those who supported the plot.
