Bannu Police Thwart Militant Attack as One Terrorist Killed

Police in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bannu district repelled an early-morning attack on the Mazanga police post on Wednesday, killing one suspected militant and preventing what officials described as a potentially serious assault on security personnel.

According to police officials, a group of heavily armed attackers opened fire on the post during the early hours, prompting an immediate response from personnel deployed at the site. The exchange continued for some time before the attackers were forced to retreat.

Officials said one attacker was killed in the firing, while several others were believed to have been injured. Police reported that the wounded assailants were taken away by their accomplices under darkness, a pattern often seen in attacks where militant groups try to hide casualties and regroup.

After the assault, Bannu District Police Officer Yasir Afridi reached the location along with Deputy Superintendent of Police Arshad Khan and teams from the Rapid Response Force and Quick Response Force. The area was cordoned off, and a search operation was launched to trace fleeing suspects and secure nearby routes.

Police said blood traces were found at multiple points around the site, supporting their assessment that more attackers may have been wounded. A constable also sustained minor injuries during the encounter and was shifted to hospital, where officials said his condition was stable and out of danger.

Weapons and other material were recovered from the scene, including magazines, hand grenades, bandoliers and equipment allegedly left behind by the attackers. Investigators are expected to examine the recovered items to determine whether the group was linked to previous militant activity in the area.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed praised the Bannu police for their response and announced cash rewards and commendation certificates for the personnel involved. Bannu Regional Police Officer Sajjad Khan also said police would continue resisting terrorism firmly, describing the force as an “iron wall” against militant violence.

The attack comes amid repeated security incidents in Bannu, where police, civilians and security personnel have faced a series of assaults in recent months. Recent incidents in the district included the abduction of workers linked to a communications project, firing on a police head constable and his young daughter, and the defusing of an improvised explosive device near Kakki police station.

Bannu has become one of the focal points of Pakistan’s renewed internal security challenge, particularly in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa close to former tribal districts. The latest attack highlights the pressure on police posts, which often serve as the first line of defence against militant movement and local intimidation.

The immediate priority for authorities will be to complete the search operation, identify the attackers and assess whether the assault was part of a wider network. Security officials are likely to remain on high alert in Bannu as police continue operations aimed at disrupting militant groups and preventing further attacks.
