PM Allows Fans at PSL Playoffs Under Fuel-Saving Condition

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved spectator attendance for all three HBL Pakistan Super League 11 playoff matches, reversing a major restriction that had kept fans away from stadiums for most of the tournament. The development was announced on Monday by Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Mohsin Naqvi after a meeting with the prime minister.

The decision means supporters will now be able to watch the qualifier and both eliminators from the stands, along with the final that had already received separate approval two days earlier. For a tournament that has been played largely behind closed doors, the move is expected to restore crowd energy at a crucial stage of the competition.

Naqvi said the approval came with a clear condition from the prime minister: fans should use public transport or reduce fuel consumption while travelling to matches. The instruction links the return of spectators to the government’s wider austerity measures, introduced amid pressure on fuel supplies and national resource management.

In his post on X, the PCB chairman welcomed the decision and said the prime minister had also conveyed best wishes to the four teams competing in the playoffs. Naqvi described the coming matches as an opportunity for exciting cricket, while also reminding fans that responsible travel would be part of the arrangement.

The federal government had earlier restricted crowd attendance during PSL 11 as part of broader cost-saving measures. The tournament was also limited to Lahore and Karachi to reduce travel demands, while the opening ceremony was cancelled in line with the same policy approach.

The absence of spectators had become a major talking point among franchises, players and fans. Franchise owners had urged the government to reconsider, arguing that the PSL’s atmosphere depends heavily on live crowd participation and that the closing stage of the tournament would feel incomplete without supporters in stadiums.

The approval is also commercially important for the league. Stadium attendance supports ticket sales, broadcast atmosphere, sponsor visibility and fan engagement, all of which matter for the PSL’s brand value and long-term growth. Empty stands during high-pressure matches had created an unusual setting for Pakistan’s premier T20 competition.

For cricket fans, the announcement brings relief after weeks of limited public access to matches. The playoffs are among the most watched fixtures of the season, and allowing spectators back into stadiums may help rebuild excitement around the tournament’s final stretch.
