Karachi Police Encounters Leave Three Suspected Robbers Dead

Three suspected robbers were shot dead in two separate alleged police encounters in Karachi’s Liaquatabad area, bringing renewed attention to street crime and law-enforcement operations in one of the city’s busiest urban districts. The incidents were reported on Monday, with police saying the shootings took place on Sunday after armed suspects allegedly confronted officers.

According to Central SSP Dr Mohammed Imran Khan, the first encounter occurred near Liaquatabad Dak Khana after two suspected street criminals allegedly snatched valuables from a passer-by. Police said the victim raised an alarm as the suspects attempted to flee, which alerted Shaheen Force personnel deployed in the area.

The SSP stated that the suspects allegedly opened fire when they saw the police approaching. Officers returned fire, and both suspects were killed in the exchange. Police claimed that weapons, a mobile phone and a motorcycle were recovered from their possession after the firing ended.

The bodies were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities. One of the deceased suspects was identified as Mohammad Sajjad, while police did not immediately release complete details of the second suspect’s identity. Further verification and documentation were expected to be completed through hospital and police procedures.

A second encounter was reported within the limits of the Super Market police station. Police said a patrol team signalled two men riding a motorcycle to stop near Choona Depot in Liaquatabad, but the riders allegedly tried to escape and opened fire. In the retaliatory firing, one suspect was killed while his accomplice managed to flee.

The deceased suspect in the second incident was identified as Muhammad Hammad. Police claimed he was an active street criminal and was allegedly involved in multiple robbery cases. Investigators are expected to review his criminal record, trace the escaped accomplice and examine whether the two incidents were connected or separate street-crime events.

The incidents come as Karachi continues to face public concern over armed robberies, mobile-phone snatching and motorcycle-based street crime. Liaquatabad, like several densely populated parts of the city, has crowded roads, commercial pockets and narrow escape routes, making both policing and crime prevention difficult during peak movement hours.

Alleged police encounters often draw strong public attention in Karachi because they sit at the intersection of crime control, public safety and accountability. While police describe such operations as responses to armed resistance, rights groups and citizens frequently call for transparent investigations, recovery records and independent verification of encounter claims.
