World Bank unveils plan to overhaul Pakistan’s wheat sector

The World Bank has prepared a roadmap aimed at modernising Pakistan’s wheat sector, with recommendations designed to attract private investment, raise productivity and improve farmer incomes.

The paper identifies five priority areas, including narrowing the yield gap with peer producers, increasing research and development spending, supporting small farmers through finance and aggregation, improving institutional coordination, and managing grain reserves more efficiently.

Dawn said the report argues that Pakistan needs to shift away from costly and distortionary legacy policies toward a more transparent, market-oriented system. The proposed transition, the report says, could strengthen food security while also creating jobs and improving rural livelihoods.
