Pakistan launches 5G rollout after spectrum licences awarded

Pakistan moved a step closer to next-generation mobile connectivity as telecom operators formally received 5G spectrum licences and began limited service rollout in selected urban areas. The launch ceremony was held in Islamabad in the presence of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and senior telecom officials.

According to the report, the government recently completed the spectrum auction, selling 480 MHz for $507 million, with three operators competing for the key 2,600 MHz band. Officials said the new allocation is expected to improve mobile internet performance and create the foundation for broader digital services.

Prime Minister Shehbaz described the rollout as a major national milestone, saying 5G could support sectors such as agriculture, technology and industry. He also said the government wanted the service to expand beyond major cities so both urban and rural populations could benefit from faster connectivity and digital tools.

Information Technology Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja and PTA officials said the added spectrum would also strengthen 4G performance in the near term, while helping Pakistan improve its regional telecom capacity.
