Senators question possible foreign links in Islamabad Safe City system

A Senate committee in Islamabad raised concerns over the security architecture of the capital’s Safe City surveillance network, with lawmakers questioning whether any software used in the system could have links to Israeli technology firms.

Geo News reported that the issue surfaced during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology, where members reviewed the resilience of surveillance systems after reports of traffic-camera hacking incidents in Tehran. Senators warned that any weakness in Islamabad’s network could expose sensitive official and VVIP movement data.

Project officials rejected the suggestion that the system was vulnerable, saying firewalls, separate protocols and regular audits were in place. They also stated that the BriefCam software deployed in the project had been acquired under a different ownership structure and that cybersecurity monitoring was ongoing.

The committee has now sought a full list of software used in the Safe City system and plans a more detailed technical briefing at its next sitting. The meeting also saw criticism of a proposal to install electronic M-Tags on motorcycles, with senators questioning its practical value for security screening.
