The Sindh government has directed all public and private universities in the province to shift to online teaching from March 16 to March 31 under an austerity programme aimed at reducing fuel consumption.
Sindh Minister for Universities and Boards Ismail Rahu said the move was taken in view of the international situation and the need to conserve energy. Under the notification, universities must also cut official vehicle use and fuel quotas by half, while 60% of institutional vehicles are to remain off the road.
The step forms part of a broader provincial savings drive introduced after the federal government announced a national conservation plan. Authorities linked the measures to supply disruptions and oil market pressure caused by regional tensions affecting the Strait of Hormuz.
The provincial package also includes school closures during the same period, work-from-home Fridays for government offices, salary and allowance sacrifices by ministers for three months, restrictions on official travel, and a ban on new purchases of vehicles and furniture by departments.
