Pakistan’s National Database and Registration Authority has cancelled 4.2 million computerised national identity cards belonging to people recorded as deceased in provincial civil registration systems.
According to the authority, the action is part of a wider effort to clean up and align the national registration database. Nadra said many deaths had been registered with provincial authorities, but relatives had not completed the separate process required to cancel the deceased person’s CNIC.
The authority added that families have voluntarily cancelled around 3 million CNICs so far. It also said people whose cards were wrongly cancelled can approach Nadra to obtain details of the relevant union council and seek correction.
Nadra further highlighted a gap in child registration, saying millions of births had been recorded at union councils without being fully updated in its own database. It said SMS alerts are being sent to parents and guardians to complete the documentation process and obtain Form-B, while child registration certificates will soon be made available through its e-service franchise network.
