IAEA clears Chashma-5 safeguards, boosting Pakistan's energy outlook

Pakistan secured a key approval from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) after the agency's board of governors unanimously endorsed a safeguards agreement for Unit 5 of the Chashma nuclear power plant, according to the Foreign Office. Officials said the decision reflects continued international confidence in Pakistan's adherence to peaceful nuclear use, non-proliferation commitments and safeguard obligations.

The government said Chashma Unit-5, a 1,200MW pressurised water reactor, is expected to begin operations by 2030. Once completed, it is expected to add a major source of low-carbon electricity to the national grid and support energy security, climate objectives and wider economic growth.

Pakistan currently operates six nuclear power plants with a combined installed capacity of 3,530MW. Authorities said these facilities have delivered strong operating performance, with nuclear generation accounting for 18.3% of the country's electricity mix over the past year and 34% of total low-carbon power production.

Officials also highlighted Pakistan's longer-term operating record, saying the country has accumulated more than 100 reactor-years of experience while maintaining safe, secure and fully safeguarded operations in line with international standards. The approval follows Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's recent meeting in Vienna with IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, where Pakistan reiterated support for responsible civilian nuclear cooperation.
