Ashes Test pays tribute to Bondi shooting first responders at the SCG

SYDNEY: Australia and England’s cricket teams paid tribute on Sunday to emergency personnel and members of the public who responded to the Bondi Beach mass shooting, with a pre-match guard of honour at the Sydney Cricket Ground during the fifth Ashes Test.

A sold-out crowd applauded as first responders and community representatives walked onto the field ahead of play. The loudest reaction was reserved for Ahmed al Ahmed, who was credited with confronting an attacker and wrenching a gun away during the incident.

Authorities have described the Bondi attack, which targeted a Hanukkah-related gathering in December, as an antisemitic terrorist assault that left multiple people dead and many others wounded. The ceremony recognised ambulance workers, police, surf lifesavers and Jewish community groups among those who provided support and assistance.

Cricket Australia’s leadership described the tragedy as devastating and praised the courage shown by people at the scene. Officials said the sport would continue to offer support to those affected.

Security around the match was also tightened, with a visible police presence including mounted units and public order personnel patrolling the venue as fans attended the Test under heightened safety measures.
