The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly convenes Monday for a no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has nominated Raja Faisal Mumtaz Rathore as its candidate for premier and says it has secured a comfortable majority with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) support.
The special session, chaired by Speaker Chaudhry Latif Akbar, is scheduled for the afternoon with heightened security in and around the assembly and government offices. Media access is restricted to accredited personnel.
PPP’s numbers swelled in recent weeks after several lawmakers elected on PTI tickets shifted allegiance. While the PML-N is backing the motion, it says it will not formally join the government. The resolution requires 27 votes for a simple majority, and PPP leaders claim their tally stands at 37.
A successful vote would make Rathore the 16th AJK prime minister, marking yet another change in a house that has seen multiple leadership shifts since 2021.
