India captain Shubman Gill was taken to hospital for observation after suffering neck pain during the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata and will play no further part in the match, the BCCI said.
Gill reported discomfort after striking a boundary on day two and left the field. South Africa resumed day three at 93-7 with a 63-run lead on a surface that has proved difficult for batting. Ravindra Jadeja’s four wickets kept India in contention, while Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma was 29* overnight. Off-spinner Simon Harmer, who led South Africa’s fightback with 4-30 as India were bowled out for 189, said his side would keep battling as the match moved quickly on a challenging pitch.
Gill’s fitness is now a concern ahead of the second Test in Guwahati, due to begin on November 22.
