LONDON: The Pakistan High Commission in London has declined to renew the passport of Mirza Shahzad Akbar, former adviser on interior and accountability to ex-prime minister Imran Khan, according to sources.
Officials reportedly told Akbar his passport had been blocked by authorities in Islamabad. The document was cancelled in 2023 following a request by the National Accountability Bureau in connection with the Al-Qadir Trust case, the same matter for which Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were convicted.
Media reports indicate others linked to the case, including Farhat Shahzadi (Farah Gogi) and Sayed Zulfiqar "Zulfi" Bukhari, have also faced cancellation or blockage of passports. Akbar, who left Pakistan in April 2022 after the change of government, previously headed the Asset Recovery Unit. His name was placed on the Exit Control List before being removed by a court order.
Officials suggested renewal may hinge on Akbar's return and cooperation with investigators. The High Commission said identity documents are issued in accordance with Pakistani law.
