World Leaders Welcome First Phase of Trump’s Gaza Deal

The White House announced that Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase of a ceasefire and hostage-release arrangement, a step Washington says is central to ending the two-year war in Gaza. US President Donald Trump hailed the breakthrough and credited mediators in Qatar, Egypt and Turkey for helping bridge differences.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called it a significant day, saying his government would meet to formally approve the agreement and prioritise the safe return of captives. He also thanked the Trump administration for its role in the talks and praised Israeli security forces.

Hamas, in a statement, welcomed the development and urged guarantor states to ensure Israel fully implements its obligations, including troop withdrawals along an agreed line. The group tied its support to achieving a comprehensive end to hostilities and protecting Palestinian rights.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said the deal must be implemented in full and accompanied by sustained humanitarian access. He framed the announcement as a chance to establish a credible political path toward a durable peace and a two-state outcome.

Other governments echoed cautious optimism. New Zealand’s foreign minister called the arrangement an essential first step, urging both sides to stick to the terms. Diplomats across the region stressed that the coming days—when prisoners are exchanged and forces reposition—will determine whether the momentum holds.
