MULTAN: Police have arrested a contractor after 15-year-old Waseem Abbas was fatally struck by a car during an alleged chase inside a private housing society in Multan. Investigators registered a case, impounded the vehicle and began examining the circumstances that led to the teenager’s death.
Police identified the principal suspect as Touqeer Nazir, under whom Waseem had reportedly been learning electrical work. Officials alleged that the contractor first pursued the teenager on foot after he left the workplace and later followed him by car with another man identified as Amjad Ali.
During the pursuit, the vehicle allegedly struck Waseem and threw him against the gate of a nearby house. The teenager died at the scene, according to the initial police account. His body was subsequently moved for the required medico-legal procedures as investigators secured evidence connected with the incident.
In his preliminary statement, the arrested suspect told police that Waseem had been training as an electrician and would sometimes leave work without permission. He claimed that he followed the boy in the car because he wanted to stop him. That account remains subject to investigation and has not been established by a court.
Police said the vehicle involved had been taken into custody and that investigators were reconstructing the sequence of events. Available CCTV recordings, witness testimony, forensic examination of the car and the post-mortem findings are expected to be central to determining whether the collision was intentional and whether other individuals bear responsibility.
Jawad Haider, an administrator at the orphanage where Waseem lived, said the teenager had been placed with the contractor to learn electrical work. Waseem originally belonged to Muzaffargarh and was living in Multan while acquiring vocational skills, according to the account provided after his death.
The case has drawn public attention to the vulnerability of children and teenagers working through informal apprenticeship arrangements. Such placements can offer practical training, but the absence of effective oversight may expose minors to intimidation, violence, excessive control and unsafe working conditions without clear channels for protection.
Investigators will now need to verify the suspect’s statement against physical evidence and determine what prompted Waseem to leave the workplace. They are also expected to establish the role, if any, of the second man named in the preliminary account and whether people responsible for the teenager’s welfare were aware of problems at the worksite.
The arrest does not determine criminal guilt, which can only be decided through due legal process. The case will proceed through evidence collection, witness interviews and court scrutiny, while authorities face pressure to ensure an impartial investigation and accountability for the death of a minor entrusted to an adult for vocational training.
