The Quetta Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged traders affected by the temporary closure of Pakistan’s border with Iran to disregard unverified reports and remain patient while authorities work to restore normal operations. The chamber issued the appeal on Sunday as uncertainty surrounding the restrictions raised concern across Balochistan’s trading community.
Commercial activity at the Taftan crossing was disrupted after the Federal Investigation Agency’s immigration gate was closed and a regulatory concession for imports from Iran was withdrawn. Trade was also reported suspended through the Gabd-Rimdan crossing, leaving trucks, containers and previously booked consignments facing delays.
The chamber’s president contacted senior officials and informed the Ministry of Commerce about the difficulties confronting importers, transporters and other businesses. According to the chamber’s statement, the ministry described the restrictions as temporary and technical, linking them to recent incidents involving vehicles on the Pakistan-Iran highway and customs-related complications.
Balochistan government representatives offered a broader explanation, saying the temporary measures were intended to address security concerns, prevent smuggling and improve border administration. They said Pakistani and Iranian officials were discussing the outstanding administrative issues and that progress was being made toward reopening the affected routes.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei also characterised the disruption as temporary. He said technical difficulties and precautionary requirements had led to the suspension of cross-border movement and exchanges, adding that the relevant authorities in both countries were consulting to resolve the problem and resume normal operations.
Despite those assurances, no detailed public notification has specified the full reasons for the closure or established a definite reopening schedule. The lack of a clear timeline has complicated planning for traders whose goods are already in transit and for importers preparing new commercial commitments involving Iranian suppliers.
The disruption coincided with a Ministry of Commerce memorandum withdrawing an earlier order that had extended an Electronic Import Form waiver for goods imported from Iran. The previous concession had been issued on October 3, but its withdrawal created fresh uncertainty over documentation and customs-clearance requirements for consignments entering Pakistan.
The chamber advised its members to temporarily stop placing new orders, booking products or making additional trade commitments with Iranian businesses. Traders were encouraged to confirm the applicable import requirements with the Federal Board of Revenue, the commerce ministry and border authorities before committing further funds or dispatching more goods.
Taftan and Gabd-Rimdan are important commercial routes for communities and businesses in Balochistan. A prolonged interruption could increase transportation and storage costs, delay supplies and expose importers to financial losses, while also affecting drivers, labourers and small businesses dependent on regular cross-border movement.
The immediate priority is for both governments to provide a coordinated explanation covering immigration, customs and import-documentation rules. Traders will be watching for an official reopening schedule and clarification on the withdrawn waiver before resuming purchases and shipments through the affected border crossings.
