Security forces killed eight suspected militants during three intelligence-based operations across Balochistan, the military’s media wing said on Sunday. The operations were conducted a day earlier in the Quetta, Nushki and Khuzdar districts following information about the presence of armed groups in the targeted areas.
According to the official account, five militants were killed in the Panjpai area of Quetta district after security personnel intercepted an attempt to establish a roadblock. The military said the suspected militants intended to interrupt local traffic, prompting forces to engage them before the obstruction could be established.
A separate operation was carried out in Nushki, where security personnel located and raided a suspected hideout. Two militants were killed during the ensuing exchange of fire, while weapons and ammunition were recovered from the site, according to the statement.
In Khuzdar district, forces targeted another suspected hideout and killed one militant during what officials described as prompt offensive action. The operation also resulted in the recovery of approximately 490 kilograms of explosives, representing the largest reported seizure during the three actions.
The military described those killed as members of Fitna al Hindustan, the designation used by Pakistani authorities for Balochistan-based militant groups they accuse of operating with Indian support. The allegation of foreign sponsorship was presented by the military and was not accompanied in the statement by independently verifiable evidence.
Search and clearance activities remained underway in the affected areas to locate any other suspected militants or weapons. Security agencies routinely conduct such follow-up operations after armed encounters to inspect nearby locations, secure possible hideouts and reduce the risk of further attacks.
President Asif Ali Zardari praised the security forces for the operations and their handling of the attempted roadblock in Quetta. He said the plans of militants, their alleged foreign patrons and local facilitators would be defeated, while commending the personnel involved for their professional response.
The latest actions follow a series of counterterrorism operations in Balochistan. Security forces reported killing five militants during an operation in Washuk earlier in October, while provincial officials subsequently announced the arrest of several suspected militants and two alleged would-be female suicide bombers in separate actions.
Balochistan has experienced a sustained rise in militant violence, leading authorities to increase intelligence-led and area-clearance operations. Security-monitoring data cited in recent reporting showed attacks in the province rising from 83 in July to 89 in August, making Balochistan the country’s most severely affected province during that period.
The military said counterterrorism operations would continue under the Azm-i-Istehkam framework approved through the national security structure. Immediate priorities include completing clearance work in the three districts, examining the recovered weapons and explosives, and determining whether additional individuals or networks were connected to the targeted locations.
