The federal government has reduced the price of petrol by Rs3.93 per litre, setting the new retail rate at Rs386.30 per litre from Saturday, October 17. The price of high-speed diesel has been kept unchanged at Rs396.96 per litre.

According to the Petroleum Division notification cited in the report, the revised rates will apply for three days, from October 17 through October 19. The short validity period means motorists, transport operators and businesses that use petroleum products will need to watch for another revision after Monday.

Petrol is widely used by private cars, motorcycles, rickshaws and other small vehicles. The reduction therefore offers limited but immediate relief at filling stations for households and small businesses that depend on petrol for daily travel and deliveries.

High-speed diesel, which is used extensively by heavy transport, freight operators, agricultural machinery, large generators and some power-related operations, remains at Rs396.96 per litre. Keeping diesel unchanged means the announcement does not directly lower fuel costs for sectors whose expenses are closely tied to diesel consumption.

The report said the government continues to charge Rs114 per litre in taxes and duties on petrol and Rs100 per litre on diesel. These components remain part of the retail price despite the reduction in petrol.

The latest adjustment comes after a period of substantial price volatility. The report noted that petrol had reached Rs458.41 per litre on April 3, while high-speed diesel had climbed to Rs520.35 per litre on the same date.

Fuel-price revisions have been made more frequently this year amid fluctuations in international oil markets linked to the Middle East conflict. In July, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik said the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority would determine prices daily in line with international market trends.

For consumers, the key practical point is that the new petrol rate takes effect on October 17, while the diesel price remains unchanged. The notification covers only the October 17-19 period, so the next official revision will determine whether the relief continues or is reversed.
