Key points
- The Election Commission has rejected Punjab’s proposal to defer local government elections until April 2027 and ordered draft schedules to be prepared immediately.
- It has also moved to begin the election process in cantonment areas and sought election-officer lists within a week.
The Election Commission of Pakistan has decided to move ahead with local government elections in Punjab and cantonment areas, directing its officials to submit draft election programmes for immediate approval.
The decision followed the Punjab government’s request to hold the local government elections in three phases in April 2027. The provincial authorities had cited winter weather conditions and the beginning of Ramazan as reasons for seeking a delay.
The commission rejected that proposal, describing the response as unsatisfactory. It said consultations required under the Elections Act had already been completed, leaving no basis for postponing the election process further.
During earlier consultations, the provincial government had agreed that local government elections would be held between December 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. The commission said it would now proceed with the process in line with its constitutional and legal responsibilities.
Officials were instructed to prepare and submit the draft election schedule without delay. The provincial government was also asked to provide, within one week, the required lists of officers for appointment as district returning officers, returning officers and assistant returning officers.
The commission expressed concern that the requested lists had not yet been supplied. These officials are central to organising elections, managing nominations, supervising polling arrangements and compiling results at the relevant levels.
The decision also covers cantonment areas. The commission said it had held consultations with the Ministry of Defence and the Military Lands and Cantonments Department earlier this year regarding the conduct of local government elections in those jurisdictions.
It said several reminders had been sent for the necessary formal process, including communication at the highest level, but a satisfactory response had not been received. The commission has therefore directed that the cantonment election programme also be placed before it for approval.
The move could accelerate preparations for grassroots elections across Punjab and cantonment boards. The next immediate step will be the approval and announcement of formal election schedules, followed by deployment planning and the appointment of election officers.
