ISLAMABAD: The federal government has reduced the price of petrol by Rs3.63 per litre while increasing the price of high-speed diesel by Re0.31 per litre under the latest fuel-price revision. The new rates take effect on October 16.
Following the adjustment, petrol will be sold at Rs390.23 per litre, down from Rs393.86. High-speed diesel will cost Rs396.96 per litre, compared with the previous rate of Rs396.65.
The revised rates were notified by the Petroleum Division as Pakistan continues to respond to volatility in international oil markets. Petrol is widely used by private vehicles, motorcycles, rickshaws and small commercial transport, so the reduction is expected to offer limited relief to many households and small businesses.
High-speed diesel is used heavily by freight transport, agricultural machinery, power plants and larger generators. Even a small increase can affect transport and logistics costs, which may eventually influence prices of goods moving across the country.
The government has shifted fuel-price reviews to a daily mechanism in response to rapid movements in global markets. Under the framework, the energy regulator will determine daily ex-depot prices using a seven-day average of international petroleum prices.
The new system allows prices to be adjusted without a separate approval process for each revision. Rates announced on Fridays will remain in place over the weekend, while authorities continue to monitor changes in international crude prices and supply conditions.
The change follows a period of sharp fuel-price fluctuations linked to conflict in the Middle East and disruption to energy supply routes. Fuel prices had previously been revised on a fortnightly basis before moving to weekly reviews and now to the daily mechanism.
Authorities have also introduced conservation measures and targeted relief initiatives as higher global energy costs place pressure on consumers. Motorcyclists, rickshaw drivers, small-car owners, transport operators and businesses will be closely watching the daily announcements, as further changes could quickly affect household budgets and operating expenses.
