Several police officials, including a deputy superintendent of police, were injured during a clash between two police teams in Karachi over the custody of suspects in a short-term kidnapping case. The incident raised serious questions about coordination between police units handling sensitive investigations in the city.

According to officials, the dispute began after the Karachi police chief assigned the Special Investigation Unit the task of arresting suspects linked to the kidnapping case. Acting on locator information, a team from the SIU’s Crime Investigation Agency conducted a raid in North Nazimabad and took the suspects into custody.

The situation escalated when the station house officer of Shahrah-e-Noor Jahan police station arrived at the scene with another police team and sought custody of the arrested suspects. The SHO maintained that his station had already been working on the case and that the arrests fell within its jurisdiction.

The SIU-CIA team refused to hand over the suspects to the local police, leading to a confrontation between the two sides. Officials said repeated scuffles took place through Tuesday night as the disagreement over custody intensified.

During the altercation, police personnel from the concerned station allegedly attacked SIU-CIA officials. A deputy superintendent of police and the head moharrir of Shahrah-e-Noor Jahan police station were injured during the counter-altercation involving SIU personnel.

The SIU-CIA team later took DSP Minhaj and the head moharrir into custody. Senior police officers intervened after the situation worsened, and both officials were released and returned to their police station.

Following intervention from senior command, the dispute between the two police units was resolved. Officials said the suspects in the short-term kidnapping case were eventually handed over to Shahrah-e-Noor Jahan police station.

The incident highlights operational weaknesses inside Karachi’s policing structure, especially where multiple units are working on the same criminal case. Further departmental review may be needed to determine why coordination failed, whether force was used improperly, and how similar internal clashes can be prevented during future raids.
