At least four passengers were killed and more than 40 others were injured on Tuesday after the Peshawar-bound Rehman Baba Express derailed near Sher Shah Railway Station in Multan district. The accident triggered rescue operations, medical transfers and emergency arrangements for passengers whose journey was disrupted by the derailment.
Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi confirmed four deaths and said the federal government inspector of railways had been appointed to investigate the incident. Earlier figures from a railway spokesperson had put the death toll at five, but the minister said the Multan divisional superintendent had reported four confirmed fatalities.
A casualty list issued by Pakistan Railways stated that 41 people were injured. Three of them were discharged after treatment, while 38 others were referred to Nishtar Hospital in Multan. The injured included at least 13 minors, adding to public concern over passenger safety on long-distance rail routes.
The train driver, Rizwan Abbas, said the train was moving at about 100 kilometres per hour when it passed through the Sher Shah station area. He said the signal was clear before he suddenly felt a jolt, applied the brakes and later saw passenger coaches off the track. He maintained that the train had been in working order before the accident.
The railways minister expressed grief over the loss of life and directed officials to provide the best possible medical care to the injured. He also said compensation would be paid to the families of the deceased and to injured passengers under the Pakistan Railways insurance policy.
A replacement train carrying more than 500 passengers departed from Sher Shah Railway Station after the incident. Authorities also arranged buses in coordination with the Multan district administration for passengers who wanted to continue their journey by road. Commercial staff were placed on high alert to assist passengers and manage ticket-related issues.
Multan Commissioner Amir Karim Khan met affected passengers and their families and assured them of support. He instructed officials to arrange temporary accommodation, transport, breakfast, immediate assistance and medical facilities for those hit by the derailment.
Train operations through Lodhran and Jahanian were later fully restored, while information and help desks were set up at major stations. The accident has renewed scrutiny of railway safety, especially after multiple derailments over recent months raised questions about track maintenance, rolling stock reliability and the condition of critical rail infrastructure across Pakistan.
