Security forces killed one terrorist during an intelligence-based operation in Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Monday, according to security sources. The action was carried out after confirmed intelligence about militant presence and movement in the area, where authorities have been increasing pressure on networks linked to banned groups.
The operation comes amid a tense security environment in the province, where law enforcement and military personnel have faced repeated attacks in recent months. Security officials said surveillance of militant activity in the region had been intensified, with a focus on restricting movement and dismantling operational networks before they can regroup or launch attacks.
The state uses the term Fitna al-Khawarij for terrorists linked to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. Officials say the Bannu action forms part of the broader counterterrorism framework being pursued under the Azm-e-Istehkam vision, which aims to strengthen intelligence-led operations and disrupt militant facilitation channels across vulnerable districts.
Security sources said recent operations had helped limit the ability of terrorist groups to move freely and organise attacks. They added that forces would continue operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa until militant networks are dismantled and the threat to civilians, police and security personnel is reduced.
The latest operation follows a series of deadly incidents in the province. Earlier this month, a blast at a joint checkpoint near Aman Mela in Dera Ismail Khan killed 12 people and injured 35 others, with the banned TTP claiming responsibility. In September, a major attack at a mosque in Kohat’s Police Lines left 23 people martyred, including 15 police personnel, before security forces killed several attackers in a clearance operation.
A separate exchange of fire in Hangu district also resulted in the martyrdom of six security personnel, including two army officers, while eight terrorists were killed. These incidents have increased pressure on the federal and provincial authorities to intensify counterterrorism measures and address weaknesses in policing, intelligence sharing and operational readiness.
Security reports recently presented to the federal cabinet said terrorist incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had risen sharply between March 2024 and September 2026. The reports highlighted shortages of modern weapons, equipment and trained personnel among provincial police and counterterrorism units, while also pointing to militant safe havens, local facilitation and cross-border support as factors worsening the situation.
The Bannu operation is therefore being viewed as part of a wider security push in the province rather than an isolated raid. Further intelligence-based actions are expected in areas where militants are believed to be active, especially in districts close to the Pak-Afghan border and regions that have seen repeated attacks on police and security forces.
