Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved the establishment of Parks and Horticulture Authorities in every district of the province, setting a wider administrative framework for urban beautification, plantation work and public green-space management.
The decision was taken during a meeting on Friday, where the chief minister directed officials to prepare a monthly plan for cultivating seasonal flowering plants. The plan is aimed at giving district-level authorities a more structured role in maintaining parks, green belts, nurseries and public spaces.
Officials briefed the meeting that Parks and Horticulture Authorities are already functioning in 10 districts, while new authorities have been established in another 11 districts. A deadline of January 2027 has been set for setting up similar bodies in 20 additional districts.
The provincial government also plans to expand the model beyond district headquarters. In the second phase, Parks and Horticulture Authorities will be established at tehsil level, extending plantation, park maintenance and horticulture work to smaller cities and towns across Punjab.
Maryam Nawaz directed officials to take phased measures for tree plantation and seasonal flowers at the tehsil, city and village levels. She also ordered the creation of in-house nurseries under authority management in every district so that plants can be supplied at affordable rates for plantation drives and flower displays.
The meeting approved recruitment for 2,820 technical staff members for the authorities. Managing directors, directors and technical staff will be hired for each district, while a separate resource plan has been sought for every district-level authority.
Officials also approved the design of food courts under the parks and horticulture framework and decided to introduce standard branding for authority staff and vehicles. The meeting was told that all C-category parks in Lahore have been restored, while every authority has been assigned targets to improve urban appearance, restore green belts and enhance park aesthetics.
The chief minister directed that trees and flowers be planted in every available open space. She said tree plantation benefits both the environment and public health, and described planting trees as a way to help reduce the effects of climate change.
