The Pakistan Stock Exchange came under renewed pressure on Thursday as the benchmark KSE-100 index surrendered its early gains and fell by more than 600 points during the session in Karachi. The move reflected cautious trading after a brief positive start failed to sustain momentum.

By early afternoon, the KSE-100 was down 682.11 points, or 0.4 percent, at 167,898.29, according to the market summary cited in the report. The index had opened on a stronger note and climbed as high as 169,486.60 before selling pressure dragged it to an intraday low of 167,851.37.

The reversal came a day after the market closed at 168,580.40 following another volatile session. Wednesday’s close was only 120.30 points higher, suggesting that investors had already been trading carefully despite signs of buying interest at lower levels.

Turnover by early afternoon stood at 104.43 million shares, while the traded value reached Rs8.21 billion. Activity was led by K-Electric, Cnergyico, Pakistan International Bulk Terminal, Fauji Cement and Maple Leaf Cement, indicating that mid-session volumes remained concentrated in actively traded names.

The pressure was broad-based rather than limited to a single sector. Commercial banks, fertiliser companies, automobile assemblers, technology stocks and power shares were trading in negative territory during the first half of the session, while selected cement stocks and oil marketing companies showed comparatively better resilience.

Market sentiment appeared to be affected by profit-taking after the previous day’s recovery and by wider concerns linked to global oil prices. Brent crude remaining above $100 a barrel, along with supply risks around the Strait of Hormuz, added to investor caution in a market already sensitive to external financing, import costs and energy-sector pressures.

For Pakistan, equity market weakness can quickly feed into broader economic sentiment because the stock exchange is closely watched by investors, policymakers and businesses as a signal of confidence. A sustained slide may make investors more defensive at a time when the country is also monitoring financing flows, energy supplies and inflation risks.

The trading day was still open at the time of the report, leaving room for the index either to recover part of its losses or close near the day’s low. The next key signal will be whether buying returns before the close or whether investors continue to reduce exposure amid global commodity pressure and domestic uncertainty.
