Key points
- OGRA has raised petrol by Rs2.31 per litre and high-speed diesel by 78 paisas per litre for one day, setting the new prices at Rs398.96 and Rs395.72 per litre respectively.
- The report also outlines the Petrol Relief Scheme registration and token process for eligible motorcycle, Cingchi rickshaw and small-car owners.
The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority has increased petrol and high-speed diesel prices for one day, adding fresh pressure on consumers already dealing with elevated transport and household costs. A notification was issued to implement the revised rates, making the fuel adjustment immediately relevant for motorists, transporters and businesses across Pakistan.
According to the notification, petrol has become costlier by Rs2.31 per litre. After the increase, the new petrol price has been fixed at Rs398.96 per litre, keeping the cost of daily travel and small-vehicle use near the centre of public concern.
High-speed diesel has also been revised upward, with the rate increased by 78 paisas per litre. The new diesel price has been set at Rs395.72 per litre, a change that is important because diesel is widely used in goods transport, agriculture, public transport and commercial movement.
The adjustment comes at a sensitive time for households and businesses, as even small changes in fuel prices can quickly influence transport fares, freight charges and the cost of moving food and other essential goods. Diesel prices are particularly significant for supply chains because they affect trucks, buses, farm machinery and intercity transport.
The report also highlighted details of the Petrol Relief Scheme, under which motorcycle and Cingchi rickshaw owners can receive a Rs100 per litre discount on up to 20 litres of petrol per month. The scheme is designed to provide targeted support to lower-cost transport users who are more directly exposed to daily fuel expenses.
Owners of vehicles with engines up to 800cc are also eligible for discounted petrol, with a limit of up to 30 litres per month. This relief category covers smaller vehicles often used by middle- and lower-income families for commuting and routine travel.
For registration, applicants are required to send an SMS to 9771 containing REG, their CNIC number, vehicle registration number, the first word of the province name and the vehicle registration date. Once the process is completed, applicants receive a confirmation message on their mobile phone.
To obtain the petrol token, registered applicants must send TOK to 9771 before visiting a petrol station. They then receive a token number by SMS, which must be shown at the petrol station to claim discounted fuel, followed by a confirmation message after the transaction is completed.
The next practical impact will depend on how fuel retailers apply the revised rates and how transport operators respond to the increased costs. Consumers are likely to watch whether the temporary price change feeds into fares, delivery costs and broader market prices in the coming days.
