Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has launched two new electric bus routes in Gujranwala, marking another step in the province’s push to expand urban public transport. The launch comes alongside directions to complete the city’s mass transit corridor by March, as officials continue work on road and transport infrastructure in the city.
The two newly announced routes will initially operate between Chan da Qila and Lohianwala, and between Khiali and Jinnah/Nandipur. These corridors are expected to provide residents with a cleaner and more organised transport option once services begin running at full capacity.
Officials briefed the chief minister that 74 electric buses are planned for Gujranwala after the required infrastructure is completed. The project is being presented as part of a broader effort to improve city mobility, reduce reliance on older transport options, and make daily commuting more reliable for passengers.
During her visit to Gujranwala on Friday, 2 October 2026, Maryam Nawaz inspected the ongoing mass transit work. The inspection included key infrastructure components such as an underpass, tunnel and road development connected to the transport corridor.
The chief minister directed officials to avoid further delays in completing the project. She also acknowledged that residents had faced difficulties because of prolonged construction work, making timely completion a priority for the provincial administration.
Alongside the transport review, Maryam Nawaz visited the proposed site of the Maryam Nawaz Institute of Cardiology. She instructed authorities to begin construction as soon as possible, signalling that the city’s health infrastructure is also part of the government’s current development focus.
The planned cardiac institute will be built on 50 kanals and is expected to have 268 beds. According to the briefing, the facility will include an emergency department, coronary care unit, intensive care unit and modern operation theatres.
The proposed hospital will also include angiography catheterization laboratories, CT scan, ultrasound and gamma camera facilities. Officials said the institute would be equipped with a 3-Tesla MRI, an ultra-fast CT scanner, two single-plane angiography machines, one biplane angiography machine, four modular operation theatres and four heart-lung machines.
