Pakistan Beat South Africa in Shootout to Finish 11th at Hockey World Cup
Pakistan ended their FIH Men's Hockey World Cup 2026 campaign with a dramatic victory over South Africa, winning the 11th-place classification contest through a penalty shootout at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands, on Friday. The teams were locked at 4-4 after regulation time before Pakistan held their nerve in the shootout to secure an 11th-place finish.
South Africa made the stronger start and put Pakistan under immediate pressure. Trevor de Lora opened the scoring in the eighth minute before Dayaan Cassiem doubled South Africa's advantage early in the second quarter, leaving Pakistan two goals behind and facing the prospect of ending the tournament in 12th position.
Pakistan responded before halftime with the attacking urgency that had produced several high-scoring games during their World Cup campaign. Afraz pulled one goal back before Muhammad Ammad struck to restore parity, sending the teams into the interval level and shifting momentum back towards the Green Shirts.
The comeback continued after the break when Rana Waheed Ashraf gave Pakistan the lead early in the third quarter. South Africa, however, quickly demonstrated that the classification match was far from settled. Mustaphaa Cassiem scored in the 40th minute to make it 3-3, ensuring the contest remained finely balanced heading into the closing stages.
South Africa moved ahead again in the final quarter when Mustaphaa Cassiem converted a penalty corner in the 55th minute. With Pakistan facing defeat and only minutes remaining, Muhammad Hammaduddin delivered a crucial late equaliser in the closing minute. His goal made the score 4-4 and forced the 11th-place playoff into a penalty shootout.
The shootout produced another tense exchange. Both teams converted their first two attempts before South Africa failed to score from two successive efforts, giving Pakistan an opportunity to gain control. Hannan Shahid helped move Pakistan into a favourable position, while former captain Ammad Butt eventually converted the decisive attempt to complete a 4-3 shootout victory.
The result gave Pakistan their best finish at a men's Hockey World Cup in two decades. The four-time world champions had finished sixth in 2006, placed 12th in both the 2010 and 2018 editions and failed to qualify for the tournaments staged in 2014 and 2023. Finishing 11th in 2026 therefore represents an improvement on Pakistan's recent World Cup record, although it remains well below the historic standards established by the country's most successful hockey generations.
Pakistan entered the final classification fixture after a mixed tournament in the Netherlands and Belgium. Their campaign included an important victory over Japan, but a 4-2 defeat against New Zealand ended their chances of competing for ninth position and sent them into the playoff against South Africa. The closing victory provides Pakistan with a positive result at the end of the tournament and gives the national hockey setup another performance to assess as it considers the team's development after returning to the sport's biggest global competition.
