Pakistan Confirms April 3-11 Dates for 14th South Asian Games
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has finalised the schedule for the 14th South Asian Games, with the regional multi-sport competition set to take place from April 3 to 11, 2027, across Islamabad, Lahore and Peshawar. The decision gives organisers a firm timetable for one of the largest international sporting events Pakistan is preparing to host and clears the way for accelerated venue, logistics and operational planning.
The dates were approved during a meeting of the Executive Committee of the South Asian Olympic Council in Islamabad. Pakistan Olympic Association President Arif Saeed chaired the session, which brought together representatives from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives. India's delegation participated through video link, while Pakistan Olympic Association Secretary General Khalid Mahmood and officials from the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination also attended.
Under the approved programme, the Games will feature competitions in 28 men's and 25 women's sports, with 346 gold medals available across the various disciplines. More than 4,200 athletes and officials from participating South Asian countries are expected to travel to Pakistan, placing significant demands on accommodation, transportation, security, sporting infrastructure and event management in the three host cities.
Islamabad will serve as the main centre of the Games and is also expected to host the opening ceremony. Lahore will stage a number of competitions and is planned as the venue for the closing ceremony, while Peshawar will also host selected events. The multi-city arrangement is intended to distribute competitions across established sporting facilities while giving different parts of the country a role in the regional event.
Officials briefed the South Asian Olympic Council representatives on competition venues, accommodation, transport and other logistical preparations. Foreign delegates are expected to inspect facilities in Islamabad as organisers move into the next phase of planning. Delegates were also shown information about Lahore venues, allowing participating countries to assess the infrastructure being prepared for athletes and officials.
Pakistan Olympic Association President Arif Saeed said the country was prepared to host the Games and indicated that the government was supporting preparations. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has already approved funding for the event, according to officials, providing organisers with the financial backing needed to advance venue work and other arrangements. Authorities are now expected to intensify coordination among sports federations, federal agencies and provincial administrations.
The 2027 competition will mark the third time Pakistan has hosted the South Asian Games. The country previously staged the regional event in 1989 and 2004. Hosting the Games again offers Pakistan an opportunity to strengthen its international sporting profile, give local athletes home-ground exposure and demonstrate its capacity to organise a large event involving thousands of visitors from across South Asia.
The next phase will focus on venue inspections, final competition arrangements, security planning and coordination with participating national Olympic committees. Sports federations will also need to accelerate athlete preparation as the host nation seeks a strong medal performance. With the dates now formally settled, organisers have a defined window to complete infrastructure and operational preparations before competitors begin arriving in Pakistan next year.
