ISI Chief Meets Bahrain Crown Prince for Regional Security Talks
Inter-Services Intelligence chief Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik met Bahrain's Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa on Sunday, with the two sides discussing bilateral cooperation as well as regional and international developments. The meeting took place at Riffa Palace in Bahrain and was reported by the kingdom's official Bahrain News Agency, highlighting continued high-level security engagement between Pakistan and the Gulf state.
According to the Bahraini state news agency, the crown prince underlined the strength of relations between Bahrain and Pakistan and said the partnership continued to develop because of a shared commitment to expanding ties and pursuing common objectives. The talks covered opportunities to enhance cooperation and coordination in areas of mutual interest, although no specific new agreement was announced following the meeting.
Regional security featured prominently in the discussions. The Bahraini leadership highlighted Pakistan's role, together with its partners, in supporting security and stability across the region. The comments come at a time when Islamabad is maintaining active diplomatic and security contacts with Gulf and Middle Eastern countries amid a rapidly changing regional environment.
Lt Gen Malik, for his part, expressed appreciation for the Bahraini crown prince's commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations. According to the official account of the meeting, the ISI chief also conveyed his wishes for Bahrain's continued development and prosperity. The meeting was attended by several senior Bahraini officials, including the minister of the prime minister's court, the finance minister, the deputy interior minister, the deputy national security adviser and the deputy secretary general of the Supreme Defence Council.
The engagement adds to a series of recent contacts between Pakistan and Bahrain focused on diplomatic and defence cooperation. Around two weeks earlier, Bahrain's Foreign Minister Dr Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani spoke by telephone with Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and congratulated Islamabad on the signing of the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement. During that conversation, the Bahraini foreign minister also indicated his intention to visit Pakistan in the future.
Military ties have also remained active. In June, General Shaikh Mohammad bin Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, commander of Bahrain's National Guard, visited Pakistan and met Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at General Headquarters in Rawalpindi. Their discussions included ways to strengthen military cooperation between the two countries. The Bahraini commander also held meetings with Pakistan's air and naval leadership during the visit.
For Pakistan, sustained engagement with Bahrain forms part of its broader relationships with Gulf states in the areas of security, defence and regional coordination. Sunday's meeting reinforces the importance both sides attach to maintaining senior-level communication at a time when regional developments continue to place security cooperation high on the diplomatic agenda.
No immediate announcement was made about additional agreements or formal initiatives resulting from the Riffa Palace talks. Attention will now turn to follow-up engagement through diplomatic and defence channels, including the previously indicated visit to Pakistan by Bahrain's foreign minister, as Islamabad and Manama continue efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation and coordinate on regional security matters.
