Bannu Police Constable Martyred as Gunmen Open Fire
A police constable was martyred in Bannu on Sunday after unidentified armed men opened fire in the Basiya Khel area, prompting an immediate security response and a search operation by local police. Officials said the attack took place within the limits of Basiya Khel police station, where the constable was targeted and critically wounded.
The fallen official was identified as Constable Saifullah Khan. According to police, he sustained serious injuries in the shooting and was later shifted for medical and legal procedures, but could not survive. His body was taken to Khalifa Gul Nawaz Teaching Hospital in Bannu Township for post-mortem examination and documentation.
Soon after the incident was reported, a heavy contingent of police reached the area, sealed nearby routes and began collecting evidence from the scene. Investigators are working to determine whether the attack was an act of targeted violence or part of the broader pattern of militant-linked assaults reported in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Bannu District Police Officer Furqan Bilal confirmed that a search operation had been launched to trace the attackers. During the funeral proceedings, he paid tribute to the fallen constable and said the sacrifices of police personnel would not be forgotten, adding that the force would continue its campaign against terrorism and violent networks.
Funeral prayers for Constable Saifullah were offered at Bannu Police Lines with full state honours. Senior police officers, district administration officials, fellow personnel and members of the constable’s family attended the ceremony, while a police contingent presented a guard of honour and flowers were placed on the coffin.
The attack comes amid renewed security concerns in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where police personnel, security forces, public buildings and transport routes have repeatedly been targeted. Bannu has remained among the districts facing persistent pressure from armed groups, particularly as militant activity has increased in areas close to the former tribal belt.
Recent incidents in the region have included attacks on police patrols, attempted sabotage of infrastructure and security operations against wanted suspects. In July, police officers were killed and injured in an IED attack in Tank district, while separate incidents in Bannu involved explosives targeting a girls’ school and a bridge.
Pakistan has repeatedly raised concerns over militant sanctuaries and cross-border movement from Afghanistan, while security agencies have intensified intelligence-led operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. The continuing threat has placed police forces at the frontline of daily security duties in vulnerable districts.
The latest attack is likely to increase pressure on law enforcement agencies to accelerate operations in Bannu and surrounding areas. For the families of police personnel, the incident is another reminder of the heavy cost paid by frontline officers as authorities try to restore stability and prevent further violence.
