Punjab Launches Mobile Labs to Boost Farm Productivity

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif launched a mobile agricultural laboratory programme on Tuesday, enabling farmers to obtain scientific assessments of their soil and irrigation water directly at their farms. The initiative, titled “Lab on Wheels,” is intended to improve crop planning, reduce unnecessary input costs and increase agricultural production across the province.

Under the programme, farmers will be able to contact the service by telephone and request a visit from a mobile laboratory. A field team will then travel to the farm, collect relevant samples and conduct scientific testing without requiring the grower to transport material to a distant government facility.

The laboratories will examine soil acidity and alkalinity through pH testing, measure electrical conductivity and assess essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. These indicators help determine soil fertility, salinity and suitability for particular crops, allowing farmers to make decisions based on evidence rather than traditional estimates alone.

Speaking at the launch, Maryam said accurate soil analysis and balanced fertiliser application were necessary for improving Punjab’s agricultural performance. She said the provincial government wanted to move farming towards modern, technology-supported practices while lowering production expenses and increasing the income farmers earn from each cultivated acre.

Test findings will be uploaded to a dedicated mobile application shortly after the analysis is completed. Farmers will receive access to their reports through SMS and WhatsApp, while agricultural specialists accompanying the laboratory will explain the findings and recommend suitable crops, fertiliser quantities and soil-management measures.

Officials told the chief minister that a central control room had been established to supervise the mobile units. The laboratories will be tracked through GPS, while dashboards, live camera feeds and digital attendance records will be used to monitor field visits, verify staff presence and improve transparency in the delivery of services.

Requests submitted by farmers will be formally registered and assigned a scheduled visit. After approval by the relevant district laboratory official, a mobile team will be dispatched to the farm. The digital system is designed to create a record of each request, sample, report and recommendation, reducing the possibility of delays or unverified field activity.

Punjab’s agriculture sector supports millions of rural households, but many farmers continue to apply fertilisers without detailed knowledge of their land’s actual nutrient requirements. Excessive or unsuitable inputs can raise costs, damage soil health and reduce yields, while inadequate treatment may prevent crops from reaching their productive potential.

The provincial government has set annual targets that include testing 20,000 soil samples, organising 500 farmer field days and training 15,000 growers. Authorities also plan to use real-time cloud data to develop a province-wide digital soil map that could help identify regional patterns and support more targeted agricultural planning.

The long-term impact of the programme will depend on whether mobile laboratories can reach small and remote farms consistently and whether growers are able to act on the recommendations they receive. The government will now need to monitor response times, report accuracy, farmer participation and measurable changes in crop yields and production costs.
