Karachi Magistrate Records American Woman’s Statement in Rape Case
A judicial magistrate in Karachi has recorded the statement of an American woman in a rape case registered after an alleged sexual assault at her apartment in DHA Phase VI. The statement was recorded on Wednesday as police continued their investigation into the case that has drawn attention because it involves a foreign resident and a teenage suspect.
According to officials, the woman was brought before Judicial Magistrate South Saima Katto by the investigating officer. State prosecutor Abdul Razzaq Gujjar said the magistrate recorded the victim’s statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and sealed it as part of the formal court record.
Police had earlier apprehended a teenage boy on allegations connected with the assault reported at the woman’s residence on July 17. The case was registered at Darakhshan police station under Section 376 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which deals with rape.
The latest hearing also focused on the status of the suspect’s custody after the expiry of his first remand. The investigating officer produced the suspect before Judicial Magistrate South Muzammil Ali Soomro and informed the court that an ossification test had been conducted.
Prosecutor Gujjar said the medical test report was expected within three to four days. He added that police had retained the suspect on transit remand because the relevant judge was not available at the time of production.
The suspect was expected to be produced before the relevant court on July 23 for further proceedings. The court process will determine the next stage of custody, investigation and any future legal action after police submit additional material.
The recording of a statement under Section 164 CrPC is an important procedural step in criminal investigations because it places the complainant’s account before a magistrate. In sensitive cases involving sexual violence, such statements can become a key part of the evidentiary record while the investigation continues.
The case also highlights the legal and diplomatic sensitivity surrounding crimes involving foreign nationals in Pakistan.
