Three Excise Officials Abducted in Chagai Checkpost Attack
QUETTA: Three excise department officials were abducted after armed men attacked a checkpost on the Dalbandin–Taftan Highway in Balochistan’s Chagai district, police sources said on Tuesday. The incident, reported from one of the province’s strategically important border regions, has added fresh urgency to security concerns in Balochistan.
According to police sources, the attack took place on Monday evening when a large group of unidentified armed men surrounded the excise checkpost. The attackers reportedly overpowered the staff at gunpoint before taking three officials away from the site.
The sources said the assailants also seized two official vehicles and weapons before fleeing. Further details about the identities of the kidnapped officials were not immediately shared, while law enforcement agencies began collecting information from the area to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Police and other security personnel reached the checkpost after receiving information about the assault. The surrounding area was cordoned off, and a search operation was launched to trace the attackers, recover the stolen vehicles and secure the safe return of the abducted officials.
Investigators are now trying to determine who carried out the attack and which escape route was used. Authorities are also expected to examine whether the incident was linked to organised militant activity, cross-border movement or local armed networks operating in the wider Chagai region.
The attack comes at a time when Balochistan is already facing a difficult security environment. Earlier this month, security forces and law enforcement agencies launched Operation Shaban after a deadly assault on a police post at the Mangi Dam pumping station in Ziarat on July 6, where attackers kidnapped and killed 27 police personnel.
Security assessments have repeatedly pointed to worsening violence in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A recent monthly report by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies noted that Pakistan’s security situation deteriorated sharply in May after two months of relative improvement, with Balochistan recording the highest provincial impact.
The report said Balochistan saw 71 terrorist attacks in May, compared with 34 in April, representing a sharp monthly increase. It also noted a major rise in abductions, with 52 of 54 reported kidnappings across the country taking place in Balochistan during that period.
For Pakistan, the abduction of government officials from a highway checkpost is a serious warning sign. Such attacks not only endanger state personnel but also weaken public confidence in the ability of authorities to secure transport routes, border-linked districts and administrative outposts.
The next phase will depend on the effectiveness of the ongoing search operation and whether the abducted officials can be recovered safely. Security agencies are likely to increase surveillance in the area while investigators work to identify the attackers and prevent similar assaults on isolated government checkposts.
