Shehbaz Backs $440m Pakistan-China Pharma Deals

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reassured Chinese investors and citizens working in Pakistan that their security remains a central priority for his government, as Islamabad welcomed a fresh round of Pakistan-China pharmaceutical agreements worth around $440 million. The announcement was reported from Islamabad on July 18, 2026, following the Pakistan-China Pharmaceutical Business-to-Business Conference.

The development centres on nine agreements signed between private enterprises from Pakistan and China. These deals are expected to expand cooperation in pharmaceutical manufacturing, vaccine production, biotechnology, research and development, and technology transfer, areas that Islamabad increasingly sees as essential for industrial growth and public health resilience.

Officials view the agreements as part of a broader push to give the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor a stronger private-sector and industrial character. Unlike the first phase, which focused heavily on infrastructure and energy, CPEC 2.0 is being projected as a platform for manufacturing, exports, skills, technology and sector-specific investment.

Addressing the conference, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan would provide comprehensive protection to Chinese citizens and investors. He also welcomed the pharmaceutical partnerships as a practical step toward turning diplomatic friendship into commercial projects, adding that cooperation in medicines, vaccines and research could help Pakistan become a stronger regional supplier of healthcare products.

The prime minister congratulated Pakistani and Chinese business leaders involved in the agreements and acknowledged the role of government ministries, diplomatic missions and the private sector in arranging the conference. He also referred to China’s consistent support for Pakistan during difficult periods and expressed confidence that the new deals would move beyond ceremony into implementation.

The pharmaceutical sector has become increasingly important for Pakistan because the country needs both affordable local production and stronger export capacity. A deeper partnership with Chinese companies could help Pakistani manufacturers access modern technology, improve standards and reduce dependence on imported inputs for critical medicines and vaccines.

The security dimension remains equally significant. Chinese nationals have been involved in several major development and investment projects in Pakistan, and repeated security concerns have forced Islamabad to strengthen protection arrangements. By publicly linking investor confidence with security guarantees, the government is signalling that economic cooperation with Beijing will remain a high-level national priority.

The agreements may also support Pakistan’s wider economic strategy at a time when the country is trying to attract foreign investment, increase exports and build value-added industries. If implemented effectively, the pharma deals could create jobs, improve domestic healthcare supply chains and open new opportunities for Pakistani companies in regional markets.

The next challenge will be execution. Authorities will need to ensure timely approvals, regulatory clarity, secure working conditions and practical coordination between Pakistani and Chinese firms.
