Pakistan’s petroleum pricing system is set for a major shift after Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik said daily fuel price adjustments would be introduced to improve transparency, reduce market manipulation and ensure consumers are charged more fairly. The announcement came on Saturday as the government moved to respond to sharp global oil-market swings caused by renewed tensions between Iran and the United States.

The new mechanism will replace the weekly fuel pricing cycle that had been in place since March. Under the revised approach, retail petroleum prices will be determined through a formula-based system linked to market conditions, import costs and other measurable factors rather than depending on periodic government announcements alone.

The minister made the remarks during a meeting with leading petroleum-sector stakeholders, including representatives of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority, oil marketing companies, refineries and industry associations. The session focused on how the daily pricing model would be implemented and what operational difficulties could emerge during the transition.

According to the government’s position, the reform has been introduced on the directive of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and approved by the federal cabinet. Malik said the aim was to move toward a more competitive and market-driven petroleum sector, while reducing space for sudden distortions, speculative gains and political interference in fuel pricing.

Ogra is also preparing to publish daily petroleum price information for public transparency. Officials told the meeting that the regulator had aligned its internal systems with the new framework and was upgrading its data-sharing arrangements so consumers, companies and dealers can better understand how fuel prices are being calculated.

The decision comes at a sensitive time for Pakistan’s economy. Fuel prices directly affect transport fares, freight costs, food prices, industrial production and household budgets, making petroleum pricing one of the most politically visible economic issues in the country. Even small daily adjustments could have a wider impact on inflation expectations and public sentiment.

Industry representatives broadly welcomed the shift as a step toward deregulation, but they also raised concerns about supply chain logistics, inventory management, refinery adjustments and real-time pricing data. The government has formed a dedicated committee to oversee the transition and resolve technical matters through consultation with stakeholders.

The reform follows a recent increase in petroleum prices, with petrol raised by Rs5.44 per litre and high-speed diesel by Rs31.05 per litre for a three-day period ending July 20. After the latest revision, petrol stood at Rs316.15 per litre while high-speed diesel reached Rs354.35 per litre, reflecting pressure from higher global prices and import premiums.

For ordinary Pakistanis, the key question will be whether daily pricing creates transparency or simply makes fuel costs change more frequently. The next phase will depend on how clearly Ogra communicates the formula, how effectively district administrations prevent overcharging, and whether the government can balance market-based pricing with consumer protection during continued regional instability.
