Bilawal Pledges To Represent AJK As Political Tensions Rise

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has pledged to represent the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir at the federal level and on international forums, making the commitment during a public rally in AJK on Friday. His remarks came at a time when the region is facing heightened political strain, public anger and calls for a more responsive relationship between local communities and Islamabad.

Addressing supporters, Bilawal said the current conditions in AJK were deeply troubling and demanded a serious political response rather than confrontation. He framed the moment as a test not only for the AJK administration but also for the state of Pakistan and the country’s political leadership.

The PPP leader argued that political representatives should act as a bridge between citizens and the federal capital. According to him, that connection has weakened, leaving ordinary people feeling unheard at a time when they are seeking solutions to governance, rights and public-service concerns.

Bilawal also repeated his proposal for a truth and reconciliation commission to deal with the AJK crisis through dialogue. He said such a platform could help the government, protesters and political stakeholders identify grievances, reduce mistrust and move toward a peaceful settlement if all sides agreed to participate.

In his remarks, he urged protesters to pause actions that worsen hardship for the public and called on the government to avoid steps that could further intensify tensions. He warned that disruptions to supplies of food, fuel and medicine hurt ordinary families the most, even when the demonstrations are aimed at pressuring authorities.

The PPP chairman said the right to protest must be respected, but he also questioned why collective punishment should fall on citizens who are not involved in violence or criminal activity. He pressed authorities to target only those involved in terrorism, robbery or unlawful conduct instead of imposing broad restrictions that affect the wider population.

The speech comes against a backdrop of repeated unrest in AJK, where public protests have reflected frustration over governance, economic pressure and the handling of local demands. The region’s political environment has become increasingly sensitive, with mainstream parties trying to position themselves as credible intermediaries between the public and the state.

Bilawal’s intervention also carries national political significance because AJK issues often resonate beyond the region itself. A prolonged crisis could damage confidence in political institutions, deepen public resentment and complicate Pakistan’s wider narrative on Kashmir at international forums.

The next phase will depend on whether the government, protesters and political parties respond to calls for dialogue. If Bilawal’s proposed reconciliation mechanism gains traction, it could open space for de-escalation; if not, the risk of further confrontation and public disruption may continue to grow.
