Security Forces Foil Wana Suicide Attack, Kill Four Militants
Security forces foiled an attempted suicide attack on a military post in the Kari Kot area of Lower South Waziristan’s Wana on Thursday, killing four terrorists, according to security sources. The attempted assault targeted a post positioned in a sensitive part of the district, where authorities have been monitoring militant movement and maintaining heightened security.
The attackers allegedly tried to use an explosives-laden vehicle to strike the post. Security personnel detected the threat before the vehicle could reach its intended target, killing the suicide attacker and preventing what officials described as a potentially major attack on the installation.
Security sources said three other terrorists were killed during the response by the forces. After the failed attack, a search and clearance operation was launched in the surrounding area to identify any remaining attackers, secure nearby routes and prevent further movement by militant elements.
Officials familiar with the operation said the targeted post was being used to protect local residents and restrict the movement of militants towards Wana Bazaar. According to these accounts, the attackers had repeatedly failed to achieve their objectives in the area and were attempting to destroy the post to weaken the security cordon.
The incident comes at a time when South Waziristan and other parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remain under persistent security pressure. Last month, district administrations in Upper and Lower South Waziristan imposed Section 144 in several areas due to security concerns and the movement of security forces, restricting public gatherings for a limited period.
South Waziristan has faced repeated militant activity over the years, including attacks on security posts, targeted violence and attempted bombings. The broader security environment in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has also remained fragile, with terrorism-related incidents frequently linked by the state to the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, referred to officially as Fitna-al-Khawarij.
A similar threat was reported earlier in May, when security forces foiled an attempted suicide attack near Azam Warsak Bazaar in South Waziristan. That incident involved an explosives-laden vehicle and left one civilian dead while several others were injured, underlining the continued risk posed by vehicle-borne attacks in the region.
The latest failed assault is likely to reinforce calls for sustained counterterrorism operations in border districts where militant networks continue to test security positions. Authorities are expected to keep the area under surveillance while clearance teams complete their operation and assess whether the attackers had support from nearby hideouts or facilitators.
