PTI Plans Nationwide Rallies on Imran Khan Arrest Anniversary
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has announced that it will hold nationwide rallies on August 5 to mark the anniversary of Imran Khan’s arrest, turning the date into a fresh political mobilisation point for the opposition party. The announcement was made by PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan after a parliamentary party meeting on Wednesday.
Gohar said the meeting had been convened with a specific agenda, but members also discussed the broader political situation in the country. According to him, the party’s lawmakers agreed that August 5 should be observed through rallies across Pakistan to highlight the continued imprisonment of the PTI founder and his wife Bushra Bibi.
The date carries strong symbolic weight for PTI supporters because Imran Khan was arrested on August 5, 2023, after a court sentenced him in a case related to the sale of state gifts. Since then, the former prime minister has remained in custody while facing several legal proceedings, which he and his party have repeatedly described as politically motivated.
Barrister Gohar told reporters that PTI members believed Khan’s imprisonment was unjust and said the party had approached courts for relief. He added that decisions on legal appeals were still awaited, while PTI’s political committee and allied opposition groups would jointly announce the next phase of their movement.
The party chief suggested that the planned rallies would differ from previous protest efforts, though he did not immediately disclose the full strategy. His remarks indicate that PTI may try to combine parliamentary coordination, street mobilisation and alliance-building as it seeks to revive pressure for Khan’s release.
The announcement follows recent public remarks by Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khan, who urged party workers to step up their campaign for justice and accountability. Speaking to PTI workers in Lower Dir earlier this month, she called on supporters to remain organised and press their elected representatives to take a more visible role in the anti-government movement.
Imran Khan has been in jail since 2023 after a series of convictions and cases, some of which have been suspended or overturned while others continue through the courts. The former premier has denied wrongdoing, while PTI has maintained that the legal pressure against him is part of a wider political campaign following his removal from office in 2022.
The party has also continued to raise concerns about Khan’s health and prison conditions. Last month, he was taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences for scheduled follow-up treatment for an eye condition, where doctors administered another intravitreal injection as part of ongoing care.
For Pakistan’s political landscape, the August 5 rally call could become a major test of PTI’s organisational strength and the government’s response to opposition activity. The coming weeks will show whether the party can convert the arrest anniversary into a nationwide campaign, and whether its allies join a coordinated movement or wait for further legal developments.
