Karachi Rangers Attack Mastermind Arrested, Police Say

Police officials in Karachi said on Tuesday that the alleged mastermind of last month’s deadly assault on a Pakistan Rangers camp in Gulistan-i-Jauhar has been arrested, marking a major development in the investigation into one of the city’s most serious recent security incidents. The announcement was made during a press briefing attended by Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar and senior police officials.

The June 27 attack targeted the local headquarters of Pakistan Rangers (Sindh), where three security personnel were martyred and four others were injured. Security forces had responded to the assault at the time, killing three attackers and capturing one injured suspect, according to official accounts released after the incident.

City Senior Superintendent of Police Irfan Bahadur identified the alleged mastermind as Qari Basheer, also known as Qari Habib. He said the suspect had been arrested by Rangers during an operation conducted after the attack, while investigators had also traced a wider network of facilitators believed to have supported the attackers before they reached the target.

Officials said the investigation pointed to planning, training and direction from across the Afghan border. Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar stated that handlers based in Afghanistan had allegedly guided the attackers and instructed them to cause maximum disruption in Karachi, including by spreading fear and targeting public order.

According to the police briefing, investigators believe the operation unfolded in several phases. Officials said the attackers were trained in Afghanistan, moved toward Pakistan, transported to Karachi with help from facilitators, and later provided weapons, ammunition and suicide jackets before carrying out the attack on the Rangers facility.

SSP Bahadur named the suicide bomber as Janaan, a resident of Afghanistan’s Farah province. Other attackers were identified as Bilal alias Hadi, who was born in Bajaur and later moved across the border, Umer Farooq from Afghanistan’s Kunar province, and Usman Sher Mohammad from Nangarhar, who was captured in injured condition.

Police also alleged that senior militant figures were involved in assigning responsibilities for the attack. Investigators said Qari Basheer was called from Afghanistan to Pakistan and tasked with arranging local support, shelter, movement and logistics for the four attackers before they reached Karachi.

The case has broader implications for Pakistan’s internal security, especially as authorities continue to warn about cross-border militant networks and their attempts to revive urban terrorism. Karachi has experienced repeated waves of violence in past decades, and any attack on a paramilitary installation raises concerns about coordination, surveillance and local facilitation.

Officials said several facilitators linked to the alleged mastermind had already been taken into custody, while further investigation was continuing. The next phase of the probe is expected to focus on identifying remaining handlers, confirming financial and logistical trails, and preventing similar networks from using Karachi as an operational base in the future.
