Zardari, Shehbaz Condemn Deadly Tank Police Attack

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday strongly condemned a terrorist attack targeting police personnel in Tank district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as the government renewed its pledge to continue counterterrorism operations across the country.

The attack, reported on Tank-Waziristan Road, targeted police personnel while they were carrying out security duties in a region that has witnessed repeated militant violence in recent months. Officials said the incident caused casualties among police personnel, including an assistant sub-inspector, while the injured were moved for medical treatment.

Security and police authorities moved to secure the affected area after the blast and began efforts to trace those involved. The latest incident once again placed Tank and adjoining districts under the national spotlight because of their location near areas frequently affected by cross-border militancy, roadside explosions and targeted attacks on law enforcement.

President Zardari expressed deep grief over the martyrdom of police personnel and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families. He said the sacrifices of police and law enforcement agencies for peace in Pakistan would not be forgotten, adding that the nation saluted their courage and commitment.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also denounced the bombing and said those responsible for spilling the blood of innocent citizens and security personnel would be held accountable. He further praised ongoing security operations, including recent counterterrorism actions in Balochistan under Operation Shaban.

The prime minister reiterated that anti-terror operations would continue until militant groups are eliminated from the country. His remarks signal that Islamabad views the Tank attack not as an isolated incident, but as part of a broader security challenge facing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

Tank has seen a series of attacks on police and security personnel over the past year, including ambushes, roadside blasts and assaults on patrol teams. Law enforcement officials in the area are often deployed in difficult terrain where militants attempt to exploit remote routes and local vulnerabilities.

The renewed wave of attacks has wider implications for Pakistan’s internal security, public confidence and provincial governance. Frequent targeting of police can weaken routine law enforcement, affect local mobility and place additional pressure on already stretched security resources in the region.

For the federal and provincial governments, the immediate priority will be to complete the investigation, identify the attackers and strengthen protection for police patrols in vulnerable districts.
